Venom Inc. Lead vocalist/bassist Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan is one of the nicest blokes on the planet and the fucker has stories for days (trust me, he’s one of my closest friends and I still hear new ones from him.) Earlier this week, Demolition Man shared an entertaining story about a time in the early ’80s when he found himself at a bar sandwiched between Ozzy Osbourne, Buster Bloodvessel of Bad Manners, and and Iron Maiden leader, Steve Harris.
So a conversation yesterday prompted the question, “did you ever meet Ozzy back in the day?” No i said, then my obvious old brain’s memory box nudged me into a wtf mate and i remembered the moment i did. Not counting meeting him pre the Blizzard of Oz show at a Newcastle night club as well as Steve Harris at the same venue following their show supporting Judas Priest I found myself in a very odd situation with both of them at once.
Kerrang magazine had a 100th edition celebration party in London where i’d been invited to attend… the whole industry seemed to be there… from Rush to Motorhead, Metallica to Iron Maiden and everyone in between.
Yes it was amazing when i think about it now!
I went for the 20th (ish) pint of ‘FREE’ (never tell THAT to a Geordie!!) beer and Steve Harris stood right beside me getting his also. Served we both turned exchanging pleasantries and we were immediately in a 4 way circle .. Myself, Steve Harris and joined by Buster Bloodvessel (Bad Manners) and Ozzy himself. The conversation that ensued i can’t really recall
in detail, but bands, music, industry with funny anecdotes thrown in, but my outstanding memory was when Buster , wearing a white overall pulled out of his pocket, a huge pork
pie which not only did he begin to consume but offered each of us a bite should we like one! Needless to say we (all 3) very politely declined the very generous offer!!!
Wow so much to remember, so much to forget!!!
