Iconic singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan is back with her first album in 11 years. In a recent press release, Sarah McLachlan announced that she would be releasing her new album Better Broken on September 19, 2025, via Concord Records.
In advance of the release, Sarah McLachlan announced the release of the album’s first single, “Better Broken.” Listening to this song, I was delighted to hear that Sarah has reached back and drawn on a bit of self-influence from the past for this new album. Its music has a dark, smoky vibe, much like her ‘90s masterpieces, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing. Lyrically Sarah isn’t laying new ground but when you’re Sarah Motherfucking McLachlan, you don’t need to break new ground.
“Better Broken” is new yet familiar, and at my age of 51, familiar is a good thing. That being said, it doesn’t have to be identical or rehashed, and Sarah has managed to avoid that.
McLachlan said in a press release, “A lot of the lyrics on this record came from thinking about the world right now and asking, ‘How do we move through this landscape? How do we keep our heads above water when it feels like so much is falling apart?’ I don’t know if I have any answers, but channeling all that angst and uncertainty into the music has been so cathartic. I hope that this record provides people with some relief and release—but in the end, I want them to take whatever they need from it, and make the songs part of their own story.”
“This album was so much fun to make, and producers Tony Berg, Will Maclellan, and I had such an amazing, joyful time building the songs together. I’ve never laughed so much in a recording studio.”
Last November, Sarah McLachlan was scheduled to begin the Canadian leg of her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th anniversary tour, but ended up having to cancel the concerts to recover from a case of laryngitis. Now, she has announced the rescheduled dates for this fall, which will see support from Tiny Habits.
“I’m excited to bring the tour across Canada, it was so disappointing to have to cancel the 2024 tour due to my vocal health, and I’m grateful that we were able to reschedule,” McLachlan said in a statement. “I’m fully recovered and recharged and can’t wait to share the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary tour with my home country, and maybe a few new songs as well. This tour is a real walk down memory lane, as Fumbling is a very special record for me… I’m hoping that the songs will bring back a lot of good memories for everybody.”
The tour kicks off on October 15 in Victoria, with another BC gig scheduled for October 17 in Kelowna. From there, Sarah will perform a pair of Alberta concerts in Calgary (October 18) and Edmonton (October 19) ahead of stops in Saskatoon (October 21) and Winnipeg (October 22).
