Album Review: The Lickerish Quartet – Threesome Vol. 1

The Lickerish Quartet – Threesome Vol. 1
Release Date: May 15, 2020

It’s no secret that we fans of ‘90s pop/rock legends Jellyfish were over the fucking moon when we heard that ¾ of the band would be reuniting as a new band called The Lickerish Quartet.  Borrowing their name from the ‘70s erotic drama, The Lickerish Quartet, Tim Smith (Bass/Vocals), Eric Dover (Guitar/Vocals), and Roger Manning (Keys/Guitar/Vocals) deliver a pop/rock EP that sounds exactly how you would think it would.  It sounds like ¾ of Jellyfish, and trust me when I say that this is not a bad thing.

The band’s debut EP kicks off with the song “Fadoodle,” which is such a fun way to kick off an album.  The spot on layered harmonies reminds me of just how fucking incredible these guys are together.  Also, I love to learn new variations of the word “fucking.”  This song sounds like it could be the follow up to “He’s My Best Friend” from the Jellyfish’s Spilt Milk album.

“Bluebird’s Blues” is a beautiful, lush Manning number, which is currently my favorite song.  It is such a floaty number that set the pace very nicely for the masterful “There’s A Magic Number.”   Another dreamy tune enveloped in the bass playing of Tim Smith and studio drummer (and 4th honorary member) Jeremy Stacey.  The EP concludes with the power-pop epic “Lighthouse Spaceship.” I love the subtle prog influences in this song as well as the obvious influence of bands like The Beatles and Queen.

Fans will probably describe this as sounding like Jellyfish, but it is unfair to compare the two.  The Lickerish Quartet is its own thing and while they may march to a similar drum as Jellyfish, they carry their own flag.  The Lickerish Quartet has delivered a collection of music that we need so badly in these dark, sad, and troubling times.  Chasing away the blues and bringing in a smile, The Lickerish Quartet are delivering cheer all the while practicing the ultimate example of social distancing.  Thank you guys for the much-needed bundle of uplifting joy.
