Album Review: Rosalie Cunningham – Rosalie Cunningham

Rosalie Cunningham – Rosalie Cunningham
Release Date: July 26, 2019

Rosalie Cunningham, brainchild behind one of the aughts best psych-rock bands, Purson, has stepped out on her own releasing her debut, self-titled debut solo album. When an artist is known for being the leader of such a modern, yet iconic, band such as Purson, one would expect that said artist’s solo material would sound just like the band he/she led. In the case of Rosalie Cunningham, this statement couldn’t be any further from the truth.

The album kicks off with the fuzz-driven psych-rock sounds of “Ride on My Bike.” The into is full of all kinds of cosmic ear candy only to kick in sounding like something that sounds like it could’ve been a lost track from Jellyfish’s Spilt Milk album. “Fuck Love” is as bold musically as it is titled. This particular song sounds as if it could be a mystical spell put on whoever it was that put her in the position to write a song like this. I feel bad for whoever did Ms Cunningham wrong because you’ve just been hexed.

“Dethroning of the Party Queen” is definitely an album highlight with its Queen-esque style arrangement with Cunningham’s signature love for the Beatles infused for good measure. “A Yarn From a Wheel” is hands down the show stopper for me. Clocking in at over 13 minutes, “A Yarn from a Wheel” is a truly remarkable epic that even features a spoken word part that reminds me that of the Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin” or dare I say Iron Maiden’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner of Mariner.” Musically, this song shows what Cunningham is capable of doing as her own artist.

Gone is the need to hide behind the moniker of a band name and gone are the expectations of what direction Cunningham needs to steer the Purson ship into. Cunningham’s solo debut is musically exciting, it’s lyrically mystical as one would expect but most importantly, it’s not Purson; it’s Rosalie Cunningham. With Rosalie Cunningham’s magnificent self-titled debut solo album, we get to hear the real Rosie free of expectations and free of constraints. If this debut is any indication of where Rosalie Cunningham is heading as a solo artist, we are in for one hell of a cosmic journey.
