If you’ve been a Black Crowes fan for any length of time, it’s no secret how outspokenly liberal the Robinson Brothers (Chris and Rich) are. Over the years, Chris Robinson appears to have been quite mellow in the public eye. It’s been a long time since The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson stirred up some controversy in the press, and in these fucked up times in our country, I’m surprised it took him this long.
At the band’s recent stop in Tampa, Florida, on their current co-headlining tour with Whiskey Myers, Robinson let ‘em have it and had to remind them all what side of history he and the band stood on.
The shit hit the fan after the band performed “Soul Singing” at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheater. One of the Black Crowes’ most iconic images dates back to their 1995 Amorica or Bust tour of a Crowe dressed as Uncle Sam. When the image appeared behind the band, members of the crowd responded with the “U.S.A.” chant.
“Thanks for the geography lesson. I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now,” Robinson said. When the boos started flying, Robinson dropped some more wisdom on the flock.
“Some of us have real faith. For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant, so thank you,” Robinson concluded before the band struck up “She Talks To Angels.”
Several concertgoers can be seen leaving their seats in footage of the incident shared by TMZ, though it’s unclear whether they were walking out in disgust or getting refreshments. Watch the clip below:
The Southern Hospitality tour featuring co-headliners Whiskey Myers picks up tomorrow, June 4th, in Augusta, GA, and caps off on August 20th in Mountain View, CA. The Crowes are touring in support of their 11th studio album, A Pound of Feathers, which is their best work since the band’s 1995 release, Amorica.
