Marissa Nadler Releases Video For New Song “Hatchet Man” and Announces 2025 European Tour

Since her 2004 debut, Ballads of Living and Dying, Marissa Nadler has established herself as a foundational artist in the modern dark folk subgenre. With each album, she consistently reinforces her position as a powerful force in the scene. Her music has been described as subtly haunting and beautifully uncomfortable—a testament to her unique ability to craft songs that can both comfort and disturb the listener by tugging at heartstrings and exhuming emotions that not everyone may be prepared to face.

Nadler returns with her latest album, New Radiations, marking her tenth full-length record. This follows 2021’s The Path of the Clouds and its 2022 companion EP, The Wrath of the Clouds. She also recently collaborated with Amenra and Cave In on a collection of Townes Van Zandt covers. New Radiations is due out on August 15 via Sacred Bones and Bella Union.

On the new track, Nadler says in a press release: “Psychic vibrations and new radiations have taken their toll on me. My narrator (whether these are first person songs or not really depends on how you want to listen to them) is feeling stuck, depressed, and frozen in a world after a tough few years for the world. Regardless, the ‘psychic vibrations and new radiations’ take their toll. The cosmic darkness we live in creeps into the psyche—but the character reaches clarity. As the song unfolds, the screen shatters, the ice breaks, and a new world begins.”

“Hatchet Man” follows the release of the new album’s title track.

She also spoke on the process behind the music video. “I made the video for ‘Hatchet Man’ using cut-out shadow figures, everyday objects, liquid light show techniques and self-shot footage—much of it projected through the soft glow of an old overhead projector. I wanted to create a surreal, crimson space for the song and its characters to live in, to tell the story without being too illustrative. This album is a particularly personal and intimate one in my body of work, and so shooting the video myself and in my own reality gives a special synchronicity to these visual accompaniments that I’m making for each of the songs.”

Marissa Nadler also has announced dates for her Fall 2025 tour of Europe in support of New Radiations.
