Swedish Psych/Roots Rockers Children of the Sun Give Rival Sons a Run For Their Money With Their Cover of “Where I’ve Been.”

Swedish psych/roots rockers Children of the Sun has been a band that I have been following since releasing their 2019 debut full-length album, Flowers.  Children of the Sun are a band that are wise beyond their years (the eldest member is all of 25 years old) and they continue to grow and mature artistically at a rapid pace.

Not ones to sit on their hands waiting for things to happen, the members of Children of the Sun stay busy with various other projects.  Children of the Sun are definitely not shy to show their fandom of American roots rock revivalists, Rival Sons and they showed their appreciation to the band that they consider a huge influence.  Recently, lead vocalist/songwriter Josefina Ekholm and guitarist/songwriter Jacob Hellenrud released a video of an the Rival Sons song “Where I’ve Been” from their much acclaimed 2014 Great Western Valkyrie album.

I asked Jacob what it was that inspired them to record the cover and share it with the world:

“The choice to do a Rival Sons cover wasn’t hard at all. They’ve been my favorite band for a long time now and the song “Where I’ve been” are one of mine and Josefina’s favorite Rival Sons songs. It’s something about the song, it’s 6 minutes long but it feels like 2 minutes when you listen to it. The melodies, the raw and pure sound really gets to me. First time I saw it live was at Sweden Rock and it made me tear up.  It’s always so much fun playing with Josefina, her voice is amazing and I’m honored to be her friend and band mate.”

Children of the Sun took a song and made it their own which I always love hearing a band to and to be totally honest, their version moved me more than the original.  Not discounting Rival Sons impact here but heads up guys, Children of the Sun is on your tail.

Children of the Sun will be releasing their much anticipated follow-up to Flowers, titled Roots via The Sign Records on March 18, 2022.
