Album Review: The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell – Very Uncertain Times

The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell – Very Uncertain Times
Release Date: 2019

Straight from the seedy side of Hastings, The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell has returned with their latest album Very Uncertain Times.  The Admiral is a band that fell off my radar but with the release of Very Uncertain Times, they were much more than just a blip.  They were a full-on frontal attack that commanded my attention.

The opening title track is hands down one the best fucking songs I have heard from a band this year.  It’s such a powerful testament to a hard life lived and a hard life being lived.  It’s really cool to hear The Admiral deliver a song that touches on such a dark, real, and relatable topic.  “The Third Degree” is a juggernaut of a track that showcases the guitar prowess of vocalist/guitarist Johnny Gorilla but its “Iceberg” that is the show stopper.

Shinning some light on the rhythm section of drummer Serra Petale and bassist Louis Comfort-Wiggett.  These two are no fucking joke as they lock down a solid, steady groove that plants its roots firmly into your fucking soul.  Was that dramatic enough?  I hope so.

Very Uncertain Times is a great offering for a band that fell out of my sightline.  It’s almost as if The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell jumped right in front of me, grabbed me by the collar of my Iron Maiden t-shirt, and politely told me to listen to this album.  Very Uncertain Times is the band’s best work to date and it definitely recaptured my attention and reminded me just what a great band they are.
