Album Review: Venom – Storm the Gates

Venom – Storm the Gates
December, 2018

Cronos & Company’s 2015 From the Very Depths was a real fucking treat.  When it was released I remember wondering just how good a fucking Venom album could be in 2015.  Well, it was really fucking good and in fact it was one of my favorite albums of the year.  2018 found Cronos & Co. sliding into home plate at the very last minute of the year with Storm the Gates and I have to say, this was not a great way to close out the year for me as a Venom fan or Cronos & Co themselves.

Now before you go bitching at me, let me just state that I am indeed a fan of Venom, Inc.  I’m a HUGE fan of that band but I’m also a Venom fan but in my opinion, Venom has put out way too much shitty music over the years.  While some of their shit is just flat out unlistenable, Storm the Gates isn’t unlistenable.  It’s just downright disappointing.

Storm the Gates as a whole sounds like it was recorded in a fucking coffee can.  Musically and lyrically the songs are uninteresting, uninspired, and just dull.  From the Very Depths had me pounding my fucking fists on my desk because it was so fucking good but Storm the Gates?  Maybe they should have called the album Barely Push on the Gates?  Who the fuck knows?

Storm the Gates is horribly produced, boring, and completely uninteresting.  I don’t know if Cronos was just rushing to get an album out or maybe he just blew his load completely with From the Very Depths.  To all of you up and coming bands out there, if you want to hear how NOT to make an album, just give Storm the Gates a listen.  It’ll be like going back to school which from the sounds of this album is something Cronos could use to do himself.
