Album Review: Monster Magnet – Mindfucker

Monster Magnet – Mindfucker
Release Date: March 23, 2018

For nearly 30 years, Dave Wyndorf has been leading hard rock legends Monster Magnet with a relentless hunger and passion for music that just cannot be put to rest.  Even after countless lineup changes , Wyndorf still manages to maintain a high level of quality control by surrounding himself with top notch players who are game to carry out his vision of no frills brand of heady psych rock.

You can call it stoner rock, psych rock, hard rock, metal; whatever you want but if there’s anything you can’t call it, that’s dialed in rock n’ roll.  Mindfucker is solid platter of timeless face rock that reminds me just why Monster Magnet has remained on the scene untouched for as long as they have.  From the opening track “Rocket Freak” and the stellar single “Mindfucker” to the seven minute epic “Drowning”, Mindfucker proves to be every bit as strong and relevant as anything the band has put out in its 30 year career.

In my opinion, Monster Magnet is the dictionary definition of a classic rock band.  They have survived through all the tumultuous changes in the current of music and never once compromised their sound or their style.  Monster Magnet is just one of those bands who have a formula but the only thing is that they forged that formula a long time ago.  They are a strain all of their own and while often imitated, nobody does it nearly as good as Monster Magnet.  If Dave and Co. keeps putting out albums as good as Mindfucker, Monster Magnet isn’t going anywhere any time soon which is definitely a comforting feeling.
