After the release of my favorite album of 2015, Jess and the Ancient Ones have triumphantly returned with the song, “Minotaure.” This is the first release from the band’s forthcoming album The Horse and Other Weird Tales which is due out on December 1st via Svart Records.
This time around, Jess and Co have taken the “less is more” approach which at first had me a bit concerned. To go from 8 minute epics to 2 1/2 minute songs is a huge jump but Jess and the Ancient Ones prove that this is just the natural course of their journey and managed to pull out their best album to date. Also, from 7 members to 5 members could have also spelled impending doom but again, the band took this as a change of course, made it work, and made it sound like it was always supposed to sound like this.
“The Minotaure” is 2.5 minutes of psychedelic horror rock a-gogo that will have you looking for a platform to jump on so you can shimmy your fucking ass off. Driven by the stellar organ work of Abraham, the guitar of Mr. Corpse, the surf punk inspired drumming of Yusuf, and bass work courtesy of Fast Jake, “The Minotaure” is a great way to not only introduce this new chapter of Jess and the Ancient Ones but to solidify their spot as the reigning kings and queen of this genre.
