Crobot – Welcome to Fat City
Release Date: September 23, 2016
Back in 2012, I received an email from a fledgling band out of Pennsylvania asking me to give their debut album a listen. When I told them how much I loved the album, they said, “We’re incredibly happy that you dig our tunes! We all think that your musical taste is bar-none! This is a huge compliment for us; so, thanks again!” That band was Crobot. It’s hard to believe that this was just a mere four years ago because this band has grown by leaps and bounds since.
This year, Crobot returns to the game with Welcome to Fat City and let me just say that this is hands down Crobot’s greatest work to date. The title track kicks things off with what I consider to be a signature sound that is all Crobot’s own. I guess you could call it dirty faced beard rock but whatever you want to call it, one thing you can’t call it is weak. That signature sound bleeds over into songs such as “Play It Cool”, “Easy Money”, and “Not for Sale” but the band sidesteps into a darker realm with “Hold On for Dear Life” and the absolutely stellar “Moment of Truth.” This song is the showstopper in my opinion. It sounds like a fine mix of Mother Love Bone meets Black Sabbath and it has the band really showcasing an exercise in versatility.
