Album Review: Stellar Death – EP

Sudden Death
EP
February 15, 2020

2020 has been a great year so far for new music, and one of the acts I am really psyched about lately is Stellar Death. Stellar Death is an instrumental based project featuring Brave guitarists Matt Kozar and Scott Loose of Virginia based melodic prog rockers Brave. When listening to Stellar Death, I can hear many of Loose’s and Kozar’s influence. “The Astronomer” opens with a beautiful Pink Floyd inspired intro and then steadily bleeds into a Dream Theater/Fates Warning sound only to segue into a Queensryche-Esque interlude (think Rage for Order.)

The two-song EP closes with the beautifully haunting “Endless.” Coming right off of the heals of something as powerfully dynamic as “The Astronomer,” “Endless” is an ambient, ethereal composition that is one of those songs that when listening I almost felt like I could touch the notes as they made their way from the speakers and into my room. If “The Astronomer” was the chaotic takeoff and exiting of the stratosphere, “Endless” was the subtle, floating return to reality that I wish would’ve gone on much longer.

Stellar Death has done a great job by not inundating listeners. With only two songs, this release is short, sweet, intriguing, and definitely, has me wanting more. I can totally hear where these guys want to go and where they want to take us. It’s the beginning of what I believe to be a sonic journey of the senses and I can’t wait for more.
