{"id":18876,"date":"2020-05-06T07:46:06","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T11:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southeastofheaven.com\/?p=18876"},"modified":"2022-01-06T19:38:20","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T00:38:20","slug":"the-many-faces-of-guns-n-roses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.southeastofheaven.com\/?p=18876","title":{"rendered":"The Many Faces of Guns N&#8217; Roses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One night my good friend Jacob met me for dinner and said, \u201cDude.\u00a0 You must have this.\u00a0 I picked it up at Best Buy for super cheap, and it looks insane.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably horrible but hilarious.\u201d\u00a0 I looked at the cover, and it said, \u201c<em><strong>The Many Faces of Guns N\u2019 Roses: A Journey Through the Inner World of Guns &amp; Roses.<\/strong><\/em>\u201d\u00a0 At first, I thought, \u201cHey.\u00a0 This might be pretty cool.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not a huge G N\u2019 R fan, but I thought it was a cool compilation\u2026 until I flipped it over.<\/p>\n<p>The compilation is made up of three CDs, so I\u2019m going to go ahead and break this shit down for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disc 1. The Family Tree I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ok, so I\u2019m not really sure what this has to do with a family tree.\u00a0 I mean, I guess a family tree consists of branches and roots and shit.\u00a0 This disc has a few tracks of the band that started this whole thing off, Hollywood Rose.\u00a0 This makes a lot of sense as this is a part of the Guns N\u2019 Roses tree, but then it gets really fucking weird.\u00a0 We have Gilby Clarke pretty much playing on songs that he had nothing to do with from the GNR catalog, and then you have these odd \u201cpay per session\u201d lineups.\u00a0 Kevin DuBrow (who was a legend in his own right) singing \u201cWelcome to the Jungle,\u201d Slash and Roger Daltrey playing \u201cNo More Mr. Nice Guy,\u201d and then you have LA Guns doing their own song, \u201cSex Action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weird.\u00a0 Were times so hard on the legendary Who frontman that he had to do an Alice Cooper cover with Slash?\u00a0 Other than Slash, I have no idea what this has to do with a \u201cfamily tree.\u201d\u00a0 We even have LA Guns covering the Guns N\u2019 Roses song \u201cMy Michelle.\u201d \u00a0Ouch.\u00a0 Add insult to injury by covering a song by the band started by your former singer who got bigger than you.\u00a0 I\u2019m so confused.\u00a0 The rest of this disc is just a bunch of terrible cover versions of Guns N\u2019 Roses song and terrible covers of songs that really have nothing to do with Guns N\u2019 Roses at all.\u00a0 By the way, how fucking shitty of a band is LA Guns?<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Kevin Dubrow - Welcome To The Jungle (Guns N&#039; Roses Tribute)\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MRAHd73w-VM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>=========================================================<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disc 2. The Family Tree II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ok, so as of this disc, the only sign of a \u201cfamily tree\u201d that I am seeing is that Tracii Guns is playing Guns N\u2019 Roses songs (he wasn\u2019t even in the band), Gilby Clarke is playing Guns N\u2019 Roses songs that he only performed live, and Slash shows up on a few tracks.\u00a0 It\u2019s all really kind of sad, and this 2<sup>nd<\/sup> disc solidifies that fact.\u00a0 This disc kicks off with LA Guns covering Def Leppard\u2019s \u201cPour Some Sugar on Me.\u201d\u00a0 Just typing that I thought I was having a stroke.\u00a0 This is what the very last person to do karaoke at some suburban bar at 3 am sounds like.\u00a0 It was so funny I had to listen again.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from some actual Hollywood Rose songs which are actually kind of cool like \u201cRocker\u201d and \u201cShadow of Your Love,\u201d this disc is just some awful karaoke.\u00a0 Let me give you a few examples.\u00a0 \u201cMr. Brownstone\u201d by Bang Tango, Tracii Guns, and Gilby Clarke.\u00a0 \u201cUsed to Love Her\u201d by Gilby Clarke, Tracii Guns, &amp; John Corabi, \u201cPatience\u201d by the same aforementioned line up (they must have cut a two for one deal), and \u201cWanted Dead or Alive\u201d by LA Guns.\u00a0 Man, after hearing that one, I went scrambling for the Bon Jovi to clean my fucking ears out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"L.A. Guns\/Phil Lewis - Pour Some Sugar On Me ?\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cuU9VHkAIMk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>=========================================================<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disc III: The 80\u2019s Metal Scene<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The third and final disc is nothing but a K-Tel like a mix of just random bands called \u201cThe 80\u2019s Hair Metal Scene.\u201d\u00a0 Let\u2019s see, we have Poison, Warrant, Bullet Boys and then we have Dangerous Toys and Cinderella, neither of whom are from anywhere near California.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a horrible mix of songs at all, but this disc pretty much could have been its own release as like a Masters of Hard Rock release, although I would consider Pretty Boy Floyd masters of anything besides sucking.<\/p>\n<p>I am still trying to wrap my head around this shit collection.\u00a0 Either way, they figured SOMEBODY would buy this thing, and I guess this time around that \u201csomebody\u201d was my buddy Jacob.\u00a0 I mean, who wins in this situation?\u00a0 The person who paid very little to make fun of these really shitty cover versions of songs or the musicians who made these shitty covers?\u00a0 Did Roger Daltrey add this to his resume?\u00a0 Was this even really Daltrey?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know the history of releases like this.\u00a0 I do know that some shitty label put out some tribute albums to shitty bands like White Lion or a Tribute to Nelson or some dumb shit like that.\u00a0 These guys from other bands come in, they record horrible covers of songs, and I guess they get paid a tiny bit?\u00a0 Maybe lunch at Subway?\u00a0 Maybe a few old roaches found inside of an old copy of Rocks by Aerosmith?\u00a0 Did they pay them in take out Chinese food or some dried up skunk weed?
