{"id":1782,"date":"2010-02-03T07:00:46","date_gmt":"2010-02-03T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.wordpress.com\/?p=1782"},"modified":"2011-04-17T18:47:39","modified_gmt":"2011-04-17T22:47:39","slug":"blowinwind_pamhowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.southeastofheaven.com\/?p=1782","title":{"rendered":"Blowin&#8217; Wind with Pam Howe of Cicada Sings\/PH Balance\/Chakra Bird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pamhowe003.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1798\" title=\"pamhowe003\" src=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pamhowe003.jpg?w=200\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a>Pam Howe is one of those singer\/songwriters\/performers that you can add to a my long list of those that you probably have never heard of but that you should.\u00a0 Pam Howe (also known as PH) was the leader of Atlanta Bossa Nova heavyweights Cicada Sings.\u00a0 I literally stumbled upon Cicada Sings by accident and to this day it is one of the best accidents that ever happened to me.\u00a0 Their one and only release &#8220;Lousy Private Fuzz&#8221; is an exciting mix of bossa nova and jazzy grooves that while retro sounding is still fresh and exciting.\u00a0 Over the years, Pam and her long time collaborator\/husband Chris &#8220;Fatty&#8221; Burt expanded the sound and vibe of Cicada Sings in a more hip hop direction with <a href=\"www.myspace.com\/phbalanceforreal\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PH Balance<\/strong><\/a> who released their debut on Daemon Records and then went on to release a few stellar independent releases.<\/p>\n<p>After relocating to the mountains of North Carolina, PH and Fatty have put together a new band called <a href=\"www.myspace.com\/chakrabird\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chakra Bird<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Chakra Bird is a marriage of all the sounds of Cicada Sings and PH Balance along with some flavor of where they are at today.\u00a0 Pam has always been one the sweetest people I&#8217;ve ever known and she managed to make some time to answer a few questions for the Brainfart.\u00a0 We talked about Cicada Sings, PH Balance and where she&#8217;s headed in the future.\u00a0 This was a great interview to do and I really enjoyed this one.\u00a0 Check it out!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/d71104y7rlr.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1792\" title=\"d71104y7rlr\" src=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/d71104y7rlr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Before we get started, I have to say that I saw  more Cicada Sings shows than just about any band I can think of.\u00a0 When I  tried to count one day, I lost count after 15 or 16 shows (including that month  long run at Red Light Cafe during the Olympics.)\u00a0 It was such a treat to  get to know you all over the years and now to have you doing this  interview! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks Don!\u00a0 That is so cool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lets hop in the Brainfart Time Machine (not as  gross as it sounds, I promise!). When did the music bug bite you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As far back as I can remember.\u00a0 I have never had  a cavity because I always wanted to be a singer. When I was super young, I  got it into my head that to be a singer, you had to have white  teeth.\u00a0\u00a0 So I brushed and  brushed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are some of your biggest influences and  inspirations as an artist? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul  Weller is my number one inspiration.\u00a0 I discovered him in the late 80&#8217;s and  he has inspired me ever since.\u00a0 his integrity, his passion, his  internationalism (ha).\u00a0 He is a bad ass and at 51 a vital artist.\u00a0  Barbra Streisand taught me to breathe.\u00a0 Olivia Newton-John was my first  hero.\u00a0 I did a show in a neighbor&#8217;s garage when I was 7 or 8  of her greatest hits album.\u00a0 Aretha Franklin is a constant for me.\u00a0  Erykah Badu&#8217;s &#8220;Mama&#8217;s Gun&#8221; album is a perfect record and hurt me when  it came out.\u00a0 Ella Fitzgerald with her purity.\u00a0 Tom Jones,  Dr. Robert, Lou Rawls, Anita O&#8217;Day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any formal training as a musician or  are you self taught? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had  two classical voice teachers when I was about 13.\u00a0 The first one  said &#8220;you&#8217;re going to do something, but I don&#8217;t think it is singing.&#8221;\u00a0  I took a little classical guitar for about a  minute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cicada Sings was a bosa nova band that was lead  by yourself and long time collaborator\/husband Chris &#8220;Fatty&#8221; Burt.\u00a0 How did  <a href=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pamhowe012.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1804\" title=\"pamhowe01\" src=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pamhowe012.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Cicada Sings come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was living in Decatur in a house with Chris and  Emile DeFelice.\u00a0 Chris played me some of his songs and we just  clicked.\u00a0 Emile played violin and then Rob Mallard got back from Europe and  started playing flute.\u00a0 We went through 13 drummers before we met  Jason.\u00a0 I forever know the importance of the drummer in a band.\u00a0  Good drummer, good band.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve always wanted to know this but where did  the name Cicada Sings come from?\u00a0 I remember talking to Fatty one night  after a show and he told me he was a big Deadhead.\u00a0 Would I be wrong in  assuming that the name came from a lyric in the Grateful Dead song &#8220;Terrapin  Station?&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Emile and Chris thought of it and didn&#8217;t tell me the Grateful  Dead reference because I was completely NOT into the Grateful Dead.\u00a0 It was  supposed to be a temporary name.\u00a0 no regrets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I can only imagine that its gotta be hard to get  gigs as a Bossa Nova band in the &#8217;90s when Alternative and Metal were dominating the Atlanta scene.\u00a0 Was there an underground bossa nova scene for you guys  or were you pretty much on your own? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Jody Grind were really big  in the scene.\u00a0 They brilliantly did 50&#8217;s, 60&#8217;s jazz.\u00a0 Bill Taft, the  Jody Grind&#8217;s guitarist had a regular evening at The White Dot and helped me by  always supporting my projects.\u00a0 Cicada Sings really clicked when we started  playing the downtown club Homage.\u00a0 It was a perfect fit and became our home  place where we built a nice following.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I first saw Cicada Sings and fell in love with  the band when I saw you open up for, of all people, Lisa Loeb at Atlanta&#8217;s  Center Stage Theatre.\u00a0 How did that bill come to happen and got any good  stories from that show? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think I got that call at the last second.\u00a0  I remember meeting Lisa Loeb and she was so tiny.\u00a0 I remember looking at  her hand in my hand and thinking I could crush it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1994 Cicada Sings released &#8220;Lousy Private Fuzz&#8221; which was  (and still is) such an amazing album to hear.\u00a0 I had never heard anything  like it and was floored.\u00a0 Cicada Sings&#8217; line up seemed to change a bit over  the years and by the time I was seeing you guys, you were a three piece along  with Thad Wilson on the trumpet.\u00a0 Did that line up ever record anything and  is there any chance it&#8217;ll see the light of day? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We did a few demo&#8217;s.\u00a0  Thad was amazing to play with.\u00a0 We went on vocal journeys together.\u00a0  The original line up was a six piece and we sounded just like the &#8220;private  fuzz&#8221;\u00a0 record.\u00a0 That record is the quintessential Cicada Sings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometime around 1995 or &#8217;96 I remember seeing  Cicada Sings starting to morph into another band that ended becoming PH <a href=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/phbalancedebut1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1794\" title=\"phbalancedebut\" src=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/phbalancedebut1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong>Balance  which was more of a hiphop\/jazzy type of collective.\u00a0 Was this a natural  transition for <\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong>you and Fatty and what brought it on? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was absolutely  organic.\u00a0 Fatty was listening to Tribe Called Quest.\u00a0 He was making  beats and asking me to write on top of them.\u00a0 MC Mudfish would come to  Cicada Sings shows and rhyme over our improv.\u00a0 He was part of the freshest  scene I have ever experienced.\u00a0 Ph Balance merged this good vibe hip hop  scene with the live club scene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As I said before, I saw MANY Cicada Sings  shows.\u00a0 How many times did you want to strangle me for requesting  &#8220;Variation On A Theme?&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I still love that song.\u00a0 So, I never wanted  to strangle you!\u00a0 It&#8217;s flattering to have songs requested.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest thing you and Fatty have going on now  is the fabulous band Chakra Bird which seems to me to be more of mix between  Cicada Sings and PH Balance.\u00a0 Was this a mediated sound or is it also a  natural progression? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An absolute rebirth!\u00a0 Chakra Bird is so exciting  to me.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had a lot of fun making videos&#8230;check them out!\u00a0 I made  videos with my brother when I was in my teens and it is a dream come  true to do it again, but with my songs! \u00a0I am working on a new album right  now for Chakra Bird.\u00a0 Melodically, it is a total return to Cicada  Sings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m sure that being the veteran that you are,  you\u2019ve shared stages with many bands while on tour or locally.\u00a0 Who were  some of the coolest bands you&#8217;ve shared the stage with and who weren&#8217;t so cool? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THE coolest was Tahiti 80.\u00a0 They are from France  and completely inspired me.\u00a0 St. Etienne, the lead girl was a classy  lady.\u00a0 their bass player ended up playing with Paul Weller!!!!!\u00a0 Pat  Benatar was awesome.\u00a0 I just realized that I&#8217;m not remembering who weren&#8217;t  so cool&#8230;so that&#8217;s nice&#8230;oh Ben Taylor&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pam_fatty.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1795\" title=\"pam_fatty\" src=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pam_fatty.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a>What artists are dominating your iPod these days  (or whatever other music contraption you&#8217;re using)? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have to be in the band as well!\u00a0\u00a0  Jeff Tain Watts on drums.\u00a0 Paul Weller on guitar.\u00a0 Bootsie Collins on  bass.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What inspires me to write is just sitting  somewhere and watching people, hearing conversations and creating \u201cstories\u201d for  people. Variation On A Theme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is Fatty at his best.\u00a0 His flowy groovy guitar  style.\u00a0 I used to be bitter about the mainstream, but no more, so it&#8217;s  lighter now for me to sing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Be With What Is<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve sung this song at so many incredible gigs.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve  had clubs full of people singing the words with me and that is just astounding  to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Twilight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Loop d&#8217; loop.\u00a0 another incredible guitar groove from  fatty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Music or Weed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was dealing with young people in a scene that I perceived  was about a party first and music second and I needed to address that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. National G<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ha!\u00a0 I love this rhyme!\u00a0 it makes me smile, I  didn&#8217;t know I had any more rhymes in me.\u00a0 it&#8217;s also my love of 60&#8217;s  national geographics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Slickers In The Sun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of my first songs.\u00a0 I still love it.\u00a0 a fun  groove.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>So are there any plans to do a Cicada Sings  reunion sometime?\u00a0 If not, when can Atlanta (and the rest of the world)  expect to see any incarnation of your wonderful musical projects live in  concert?\u00a0 Any plans in the foreseeable future? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am not a reunion  type person.\u00a0 I really am inspired and vital in the now, so I can&#8217;t imagine  any kind of reunion.\u00a0 Chakra Bird actually played Atlanta last  summer.\u00a0 It was nice to come back.\u00a0 The experience propelled me into  the future.\u00a0 I saw who I am today on a stage from yesterday and it was a  big gift to me.\u00a0 When this album is finished,\u00a0 who knows!\u00a0 I miss  performing.\u00a0 We have performed a lot in Asheville and it&#8217;s been really  expanding and fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pamhowe02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1797\" title=\"pamhowe02\" src=\"http:\/\/greatsouthernbrainfart.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/pamhowe02.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>So whenever I&#8217;m driving and Boston&#8217;s \u201cMore Than  A Feeling\u201d comes on the radio, I just can&#8217;t help but sing and sing REALLY badly  along with it.
