When it was announced that Lizzy would be releasing My Midnight Things (his first album of new material since 2007\u2019s Appointment with Death) I was pretty fucking stoked. I was also a bit hesitant since the last thing I ever heard from Lizzy Borden was the brilliant Master of Disguise album.<\/p>\n<p>Right out the gates, the title track is spectacular. Lizzy\u2019s voice has been practically untouched by time and he sounds better than ever. \u201cObsessed with You\u201d is also a great example of how Lizzy still has that dynamic yet powerful voice and has the ability to write very melodically and even catchy. As the album played on, I started to notice that it all just started sounding like one long song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRun Away With Me\u201d is where the album takes a bit of a turn and almost serves a break in the monotonous of the bulk of the beginning of that album but even this song at about the half way mark started to annoy because it was so monotonous. The album\u2019s King Diamond-esque closing song \u201cSilent Night\u201d to be honest was probably one of my favorite moments if anything because it was a huge, dramatic break from the rest of the album and closed things out in a much unexpected way.<\/p>\n<p>My Midnight Things isn\u2019t a bad album; it\u2019s just not a great album. I found the songwriting to be somewhat disappointing as there was little to no dynamics from song to song. The songs all seemed come across as one long song with a few breaks and the overly digitized production made it even more distracting and honestly hard to listen to.
