The ups being that we get a lot of fucking kick ass shows in this town. The downs being that I dislike just about every fucking band in this town. With the exception of two or three bands tops, no band in this town has really made say, “Wow, this is fucking good.” When I was asked to check out the debut album by Gunpowder Gray, my first thought was, “Oh no, here we go again.” Well, from the first chord of the opening track “Gunpowder Gray” I just crossed my fingers and thought, “Please let this album be as good as this one song.” Well, luckily it was.

The debut album from Atlanta sleaze rockers Gunpowder Gray is a non-stop full throttle hard rock album that truly blew me away and totally tugged on my little nostalgic heartstrings. Gunpowder Gray totally embodies that feeling and that vibe of bands such as Rhino Bucket and Faster Pussycat with a touch of Southern drawl and swagger ala Tora Tora. That 90’s hard rock sound is something I grew up loving and to this day love hearing when it’s done right and done well. As I listened to this album it was very obvious that Gunpowder Gray truly loves this kind of music.

EP by Gunpowder Gray
Songs like “Outta My Way”, “Dancing with Death” and “Cut Me Out” were the ones that stood out to me but it was the albums closing song “Saints” that I found to be the highlight of the album. This particular song really showed the strength and diversity of lead singer Nate Godbee and could’ve been the best Cult song never written. “Saints” was a great way to close out this album. It was the strongest of a collection of already strong material that left me wanting more. Gunpowder Gray is a solid hard rock band with great songs, catchy hooks, and an honest and sincere delivery. It’s nice to finally find another local Atlanta band that I can be excited about. If this album is of any indication as to where they’re heading, Gunpowder Gray will have a great future. They just need to keep their focus, stick to their guns, and keep it sincere because this is what made me a fan in the first place. I’m sure it will bring them many more.

Gunpowder Gray Release Date: April 19, 2014 Boris Records Living in Atlanta has its ups and downs.
