\"lioo\"<\/a>Written on the morning of March 24, 2014<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

At 7:00 am this morning as I sat in my chair having my first cup of coffee and talking to my wife a message pops up on my phone from a good friend of mine.\u00a0 The message started out with, \u201cDon, I have some terrible news.\u201d\u00a0 Being that me and my friends always fuck around with each other I was waiting for the punchline.\u00a0 The only thing was that the punchline never came.\u00a0 She replied, \u201cIt\u2019s about Dave Brockie.\u00a0 They found him dead in his home.\u201d\u00a0 I then quickly checked my calendar to make sure it wasn\u2019t April 1st<\/sup>.\u00a0 I then realized that what I was doing was the same thing that people do in shock and disbelief when hearing news like this.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a joke and it wasn\u2019t a rumor.\u00a0 Dave \u201cOderus Urungus\u201d Brockie was found dead in his residence by his roommates on March 23, 2014.\u00a0 He was only 50 years old.<\/p>\n

When someone dies, especially a celebrity, the first question people ask is, \u201cHow?\u201d\u00a0 As I sit here typing this, I just can\u2019t help but feel that it\u2019s irrelevant to anything.\u00a0 Why does it matter how someone dies?\u00a0 Just so you\u2019re speculations can be confirmed?\u00a0 If anyone who knew Dave or was a just a huge fan, we can all only hope that he died on the toilet.\u00a0 He would\u2019ve loved that more than anything.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if his wishes were to have his body moved to the toilet in the event that he was found dead somewhere else.\u00a0 Ok, you see what I did there?\u00a0 That is exactly what Dave would\u2019ve done if someone had died.\u00a0 He would\u2019ve found a way to make a tasteless joke of some sorts in order to lighten the bearing load of sad news.\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of person Dave was and that\u2019s why his family, friends, and fans loved him so much.\u00a0 Even when he was saying shit that you didn\u2019t always get behind we all had this respect and admiration for him.\u00a0 In many ways Dave said all the things that we usually only thought and tucked away in the back of our minds.\u00a0 That man just didn\u2019t give a fuck and in a lot of ways was a huge influence and inspiration behind this here blog.<\/p>\n

The same friend of mine who broke this news to me this morning asked me: \u201cWhat made you like GWAR in the first place?\u201d\u00a0 I immediately started reminiscing on my years as a GWAR fan.\u00a0 I can still remember the day that I first heard them.\u00a0 It was 1988 and I was in 9th<\/sup> grade Art class.\u00a0 This kid sitting next to me goes, \u201cYou like metal right?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI sure do\u201d I replied.\u00a0 \u201cHere, listen to this\u201d he says.\u00a0 He hands me a blank cassette and scrawled on the little sticker label is \u201cGWAR \u2013 HELL-O\u201d I was like, what the fuck is GWAR?\u00a0 There was no picture, no nothing.\u00a0 I had no idea what this band looked like but when I popped the cassette into my Walkman, I couldn\u2019t believe what I was hearing.\u00a0 \u201cTime For Death\u201d, \u201cPure as the Arctic Snow\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m In Love with a Dead Dog.\u201d\u00a0 It was like the Ramones singing Alice Cooper type lyrics with metal guitar solos.\u00a0 I told this kid I loved it but wanted more and he says, \u201cThis is all they have.\u00a0 Oh, here\u2019s what they look like\u201d and shows me his original cassette cover.\u00a0 I about lost my mind.\u00a0 From there, I was hooked.<\/p>\n

It would 1992 before I would see my very first GWAR show and from that show on I would forever be a GWAR fan.\u00a0 GWAR\u2019s live shows were always special and as the years passed they would became legendary.\u00a0 You just never knew what GWAR was going to do and every year it was, \u201cWho are they going to kill this year?\u201d\u00a0 One year it was Jerry Garcia, one year it was JonBennett Ramsey, and another year it might be George W. Bush, Paris Hilton, or Saddam Hussein.\u00a0 Over the years I would see 12 GWAR shows and while the live shows were always what we loved, it was their music that was every bit as a strong, compelling, and thought provoking as their live show.<\/p>\n
