{"id":10207,"date":"2012-09-12T07:00:16","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T11:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southeastofheaven.com\/?p=10207"},"modified":"2022-01-06T19:58:25","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T00:58:25","slug":"retro-review-gorky-park-gorky-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.southeastofheaven.com\/?p=10207","title":{"rendered":"Retro Review: Gorky Park &#8211; Gorky Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/southeastofheaven.com\/?attachment_id=10208\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10208\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10208\" title=\"220px-Gorky_Park_-_Gorky_Park_album_cover\" src=\"https:\/\/southeastofheaven.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/220px-Gorky_Park_-_Gorky_Park_album_cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><strong>Gorky Park \u2013 Gorky Park<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Release Date<\/strong>: 1989<br \/>\n<strong>The Good<\/strong>: Bang, Try and Find Me, Hit Me With The News, Sometimes At Night, My Generation, Child of the Wind, Fortress, Action<br \/>\n<strong>The Bad<\/strong>: Peace In Our Time,<br \/>\n<strong>The Indifferent<\/strong>: Within Your Eyes, Danger<\/p>\n<p>Back in 1989, the hard rock\/metal world was wowed by The Moscow Music Peace Festival which took place at Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Russia.\u00a0 For the first time, some of the biggest names in hard rock (Skid Row, Cinderella, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, and Bon Jovi) would join forces and perform a benefit for substance abusers in Russia (go figure).\u00a0 In exchange, we got Russian hard rockers Gorky Park.\u00a0 Now if you ask anyone who was a headbanger teen back then, they without a doubt saw this band\u2019s video for the song \u201cBang\u201d on MTV which was on in heavy rotation.\u00a0 The band was met with a lot of mixed words.\u00a0 You either dug them or you hated them and I was one of the ones that loved what they were doing.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Listening to this album over 20 years later, it\u2019s really amazing to me how fun and still unique this album sounds.\u00a0 Gorky Park took elements of their homeland\u2019s percussive sounds and even their gang-like chanting background vocals.\u00a0 Lead singer Nikolai Noskov had such powerful and unique voice that I still feel like I am hearing something really special.\u00a0 \u201cBang\u201d still sounds cool and is a really neat way to open the album.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it\u2019s anywhere near as strong as some of the other songs on the album but it\u2019s still a cool song mixing American and Russian lyrics to create something really different.\u00a0 Gorky Park seems to teeter more on the mellow\/melodic side of things with some really beautiful songs like \u201cTry and Find Me\u201d and \u201cChild of the Wind\u201d and the song \u201cSometimes At Night\u201d reminds me of something that could\u2019ve been an Ozzy Osbourne song reminiscent of \u201cFire In The Sky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u4h690KdgA4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/center>The album does have some pretty cool, rocking songs like \u201cHit Me with the News\u201d and \u201cAction\u201d but it\u2019s their cover of The Who\u2019s \u201cMy Generation\u201d that really blows me away. \u00a0I love nothing more than when a band can take a song by another artist to totally make it their own.\u00a0 I feel like this song is probably met with a lot of hate but I love what Gorky Park did to this song.\u00a0 They kept the spirit of the song while totally making it a heavy metal anthem complete with Russian chanting to make it relevant to their own people.\u00a0 There are a few duds on here but the weakest of the weak is the Jon Bon Jovi penned \u201cPeace In Our Time.\u201d\u00a0 Leave it to ol\u2019 Jon BJ to find a way to stick his brown finger in something.\u00a0 I loved how he proudly proclaimed \u201cdiscovering\u201d this band only to drop them like a bad habit when they flopped here in the states.\u00a0 Oh well.\u00a0 Even that song is \u201clistenable\u201d at best but it still sucks.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lbeoEPNB-Vk\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/center>Gorky Park is not a band for everyone.\u00a0 I\u2019m not even quite sure who this album would appeal to being that most of my metalhead friends made fun of me for liking this one.
